Minecraft Sever Custom Map Help?

Right, every time when I try to run a custom map on Minecraft, it just spawns a new world! I change the server properties to the right name, and I extract files with WinRAR and everything, I don't know where I'm going wrong! Can someone give me a detailed walkthrough thing of what to do to run a custom map on a server?
