What was the result of Japan’s expansion into Manchuria, China?
In 1937 China and Japan went to war over the disputed territory of Manchuria. The United States supported China and placed an embargo on scrap metal and oil trade with Japan. Risking running out of oil by early 1942 Japan felt they had no choice but to strike oil fields in the South Pacific, where the U.S. had a territory, Hawaii, and many naval bases. The Navy order ships to Pearl Harbor to fight off the Japanese when they arrived (leaked to the Chicago Daily Tribune), and in response Japan bombed the naval base at Pearl Harbor. The United States was no in greater opposition to japan than they had ever been before. The U.S. declared war on Japan in early 1942 and, with China's assistance, and on the side of the Allies, America entered World War II.
