What am i doing wrong here?

Ok sense this time last year ive gone through like 5 pairs of earphones. the problem is they will only play through one side. the cord starts coming out of the part that connects to the ipod or they get a cut in them and sever the wire. what can i do to prevent this and is there a really good pair of earphones that will work
