Something in dogs ear?

i recently found a stray and he has a large lump. its about the size of a finger nail in one ear. id like to take him to the vet but i dont plan on keeping him so that would be a bit of a waste and i dont really have the money to do so . IT IS NOT A TICK. its black and has hair tangled in it and is only attached to his ear at one part so it is sorta just dangling in there. any idea on what this could be?
